What is plastic injection?
Plastic injection or injection moulding is a fabrication process by injecting a molten material, in this case plastic, into a mould. It is used to produce many different products such as automotive parts, toys, small tables, one piece chairs, bottle caps, packaging, containers and most other plastic based products. Plastic injection is the most common method to manufacture plastic products in high volumes. The most common materials used for plastic injection are:
– Epoxy
– Phenolic
– Polyethylene
– Polystyrene
– Nylon
In its essence, plastic injection works by melting plastic pallets (raw plastic material) and pushing it into a mould cavity. This mould is made beforehand based on design specifications (e.g. CAD artwork). Chinese suppliers usually have a third party mould company that can take the artwork of a product and make moulds for it accordingly. This can be a costly and lengthy process. When large production quantities are required, having more than one mould of the same product will shorten the production timeline. This will allow a higher production output per day. In this scenario it is common to mark moulds of the same product. This separates them in case the QC inspection shows defects. Specifically to see if for example “Mould A” produces faulty goods and “Mould B” doesn’t.
